Re: Visions of Johanna performed by Garcia circa 1980 |
I was at these three shows in Hampton and when they did this song I didn't know what it was. The person in front of us overhead our group trying to figure out the song and turned around and told us. Great song and now that I know Dylan's catalog I appreciate seeing the Dead do it even more. The next night was the big break out. First Box of Rain since 1973. The place went crazy. A Roadrunner the third night was cool but Weir was singing off key; if I remember correctly. Roadrunner is definitely better when Jerry sings it. Same with Masterpiece in my opinion.

I was there with you.... As loud as I ever heard a place when Phil started "singing".

each verse was met with a full throated roar. Stood screaming for most of the set break. It was quite something.

Re: Visions of Johanna performed by Garcia circa 1980 |
I thought you probably were. We drove up from North Carolina and I was a senior in High School. I got suspended for unexcused absences. My friend Cam was fired from his job. My other friend Vernon didn't have job so he was alright and the last of us Ty; well I don't think his parents even noticed that he left town. So many memories from this pilgrimage to Hampton. Damn I miss those good times.

Re: Visions of Johanna performed by Garcia circa 1980 |
I personally flew to the top of the coliseum this night and watched the 1st set from the rafters. Doing the 'boost' just before going through the doors after sitting in the parking lot watching the raindrops roll down the glass for hours on end. 4 guys in the car and nobody was able to reach out to change the tape. We listened to Long Beach '81 set II about 3 times LOL. The Mick Jagger lips Narc chick trying to make dose sales car to car... Anyone else remember her?
